I wish….but no.

The dealerships Pre-Delivery Inspections (PDIs) are usually performed by the least experienced technicians.

Why?

Because checking an RV is much easier than repairing one. The dealership’s best technicians spend their time fixing RVs, while PDIs go the new guy.

Even if you happen to get an excellent technician performing the PDI, remember who pays his bills.

He works for the dealership—not for you.

If an RV is a lemon, you should walk away from the sale.

No tech who values his job is going to tell you information that could cost his employer a sale.

If you want to avoid lemon RVs, you need to educate yourself or hire a 3rd party inspector. The dealer is not your friend. 

Yes. In fact, sometimes it takes you 2 seconds.

You aren’t trying to inspect every system on the RV. You’re simply answering one question:

“Is this RV worth inspecting further?”

Two things make an RV an obvious “walk away” lemon – water damage and frame damage.

During the 5-minute check, you’ll look for 12 signs. If the RV fails the check, you walk away. 

The main tool I use during my 5-minute Lemon Check is a radio-frequency moisture meter.

You can technically check an RV without this tool, but it is very helpful for identifying hidden water damage, or water intrusion at the early stages.

I have an entire module on how to use a moisture meter, as people often misuse them and trick themselves into thinking a perfectly fine RV is water damaged. 

There are two other helpful tools – a selfie stick and a metal detector – and they are all cheap.

Other than these, all you need are your eyes, your ears, and your hands.

Think of the 5-Minute Lemon Check as your first pass.

Its purpose is to quickly eliminate RVs with major deal-breaking problems before you spend money on a professional inspection—or worse, accidentally buy a lemon.

An RV can pass the Lemon Check and still have many repairable issues that are worth catching with a full inspection. 

Usually not, at least not to the untrained eye.

Most Lemon RVs don’t look bombed out, or like a homeless person has been sleeping in. In fact, these RVs often look really nice.

Thats because frame and water damage are structural damage.

These important strucutral pieces of wood and metal are hidden behind walls, flooring and paneling.

You cant see the frame.

You cant see the wood.

But if they’re broken, so is the entire RV.

The reason they’re hard to spot is also the reason they’re hard to fix.

To get access to rotten wood or broken frame pieces, you need to tear the whole RV apart and then rebuild it from the ground up.

Sometimes the signs are obvious.

Most of the time you need to know what you’re looking for and have the right tools and training – then the signs are easy to find.

If you don’t, odds are not in your favor.
